Compare web analytics tools
A web analytics tool measures what happens on your website: how many visitors come, which search engine, advertisement or newsletter they arrive through, which pages they view and where they drop off. That gives you more than isolated website statistics: you can also see which campaigns generate enquiries or orders. Web analytics is for anyone with a site, from the freelancer with a blog to the webshop and the large company. Usually you place a small piece of code on your site and then read the figures in a dashboard.
Visitor figures, heatmap tool or product analytics?
The first choice is what you want to know. A website analytics tool such as Google Analytics, Matomo or Piwik PRO measures visits, traffic sources and conversions. If you are looking for a Google Analytics alternative that measures without cookies, look at Plausible Analytics, Fathom Analytics or the Dutch providers Simple Analytics and Snoobi Analytics.
If you want to analyse website visitors as they move through a page, choose a heatmap tool. Microsoft Clarity, Mouseflow, Lucky Orange and Hotjar, which now belongs to Contentsquare, create a heatmap of your website and record sessions. You then see where people click and how far they scroll. For an app or online service there is an analytics tool for product teams, such as Mixpanel or Amplitude. If you are looking for a website analysis tool that checks your visibility in Google, see SEO tools.
What should you look out for?
- Privacy and cookies: check whether the tool places cookies, whether you have to ask for consent for that and where the data is stored.
- Pricing model: you usually pay according to the number of page views, sessions or events per month. Check what happens if you go over the limit.
- Cloud or own server: if you want to manage the data yourself, you can, for example, install Matomo on your own server.
- Integrations: check whether the tool works with your website system, your webshop and your advertising accounts.
