Compare planning software

With planning software you divide the work over your people and resources. On a digital planning board you see who is working on what and when, who still has time and where it is getting too full. You drag a new job to an employee, a team or a machine. If something shifts, you adjust the planning immediately. Companies with projects, fitters, a workshop or an agency switch to a planning tool when the planning in Excel or on a whiteboard has become impossible to oversee. Everyone then looks at the same, up-to-date planning in the planning software.

Digital planning board or resource planning?

The first choice is what you mainly want to plan. An online planning board such as PlanningPME or Planning.nl is there for the daily work: dividing orders, tasks and jobs among people, machines and equipment. Resource planning software such as Float, Resource Guru, Ganttic and Runn looks further ahead. With it you schedule employees on projects and see the workload for the coming weeks and months. If you only want to make a schedule online for one project, a simple planning program with a timeline is enough, such as Tom's Planner.

Are you looking for a roster with shifts for your staff? You will find that under staff scheduling software.

What should you look out for?

  • What you plan: only employees, or also machines, vehicles and rooms? Not every planning program can handle equipment.
  • Pricing model: one supplier charges per user, another per resource that you schedule. So count both your planners and the people and resources on the board.
  • Capacity: check whether you see availability, leave and skills while planning. For capacity planning you also want to see the occupancy over a longer term.
  • Integrations and app: check whether the planning connects to your calendar, time tracking or ERP, and whether employees see their work in a planning app on their phone.
