The main difference
Bitwarden is open source: the code is public and can be checked by anyone, and with Enterprise you run Bitwarden on your own servers. 1Password is closed software from Toronto and only runs in 1Password's cloud. Both encrypt your vault so that the provider cannot read your passwords.
Choose 1Password if
- ease of use for all employees comes first;
- you want alerts about weak and leaked passwords across the whole organisation;
- you want accounts to be created and removed automatically via your identity service.
Choose Bitwarden if
- you value open source or want the vault on your own servers;
- you are looking for a low price per user: Teams costs $4 and Enterprise $6 per user per month with annual billing;
- you need an extensive log and an API for administration.
What to look out for with both
Both are available for teams and large organisations, with shared vaults, policies and single sign-on. Try them with a few colleagues and see how sharing per team works and how you grant or revoke someone's access.
