The main difference
Here you are mainly choosing between two office environments. Google Drive is part of Google Workspace, with Gmail, Meet and Docs, Sheets and Slides, in which several people work in the browser at the same time. OneDrive is part of Microsoft 365, with Teams, Outlook and Word, Excel and PowerPoint. If your organisation already works with Office files and Teams, OneDrive fits in without converting anything; if you mainly work in the browser, Google Drive is the better fit.
Choose Google Drive if
- your team mainly works together in Google Docs and Sheets;
- you need a lot of storage per user: Business Standard gives 2 TB and Business Plus 5 TB per user, pooled across the organisation;
- you do not want to be tied to an annual contract: without an annual contract, Business Starter costs €8,10, Business Standard €16,20 and Business Plus €25,30 per user per month; with an annual contract that is €6,80, €13,60 and €21,10 (prices October 2026).
Choose OneDrive if
- your organisation already works with Microsoft 365, Teams or Windows;
- your files are mainly Word, Excel and PowerPoint files that you also edit in the desktop programs;
- you want a lot of storage with the smallest plan: Microsoft 365 Business Basic costs €6,07 per user per month with an annual subscription, excluding VAT, with 1 TB of storage per user (price October 2026).
What to look out for with both
The business plans of Google (Starter, Standard and Plus) and Microsoft 365 Business are available for up to 300 users; above that you end up with the Enterprise plans. Business Basic only has the web and mobile versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint; for the desktop versions you need Business Standard or higher. You can try Google Workspace free for 14 days. Also consider what switching costs: files, permissions and shared folders have to come along.
