POS system for Belgium

A restaurant or caterer in Belgium must use a registered cash register system, the white till, once its revenue from meals exceeds 25,000 euros a year. A shop has no such obligation, but still wants a till that is supported in Belgium. These are the POS systems whose supplier shows on its own site that they are sold in Belgium, with the features they list.

What to look for in Belgium

  • The white till in hospitality: a business where meals are eaten, and a caterer, uses a registered cash register system (GKS) once its annual revenue from meals exceeds 25,000 euros excluding VAT. Drinks served with a meal do not count towards it.
  • GKS 2.0: since 1 July 2026 the new version is mandatory. An existing white till has its own deadline for switching; ask the supplier for its system's certificate.
  • Shops: the white till obligation does not apply to a shop. You do want a till that keeps your daily takings and that your accountant can read.
  • Payments: check whether the till sends the amount straight to your payment terminal, and which payment providers it works with.
  • Invoices to businesses: if you also sell to other businesses, since 1 January 2026 you send an e-invoice through Peppol. Some tills do that themselves.

Frequently asked questions about tills in Belgium

Do I need a white till?

If you run a restaurant, a café with a kitchen or a catering business and make more than 25,000 euros a year (excluding VAT) from meals, yes. Below that threshold you may, but you do not have to. The obligation does not apply to shops.

Which POS systems have a GKS certificate?

On their own sites, Winston POS and Lightspeed Restaurant mention the Belgian GKS certification. For the other systems on this page, ask if you want to use them in hospitality. The rules themselves are on geregistreerdkassasysteem.be, the site of the Belgian Federal Public Service Finance.

What does a POS system cost?

You usually pay a monthly subscription for the software, plus hardware and fees per payment. Read what a POS system costs. If you need a white till, ask whether the certificate and the registration are included in the price.
