Software for wholesale
A wholesaler earns its margin with purchasing, stock and fast delivery. Software keeps that manageable: what is in stock, which prices a customer gets, which orders need to be ready and which invoices are still unpaid. Here you can see, per area, which packages their suppliers say are suitable for trade.
At most wholesalers, an ERP or trade package is the centre: items, prices, purchasing, sales and stock in one system. Around it are a warehouse system for order picking, a B2B web shop where customers order themselves, and software for quotes, customer contact and purchase invoices. The larger the range and the number of orders, the more important it is that these packages connect well.
ERP and trade package
An ERP for trade manages items, customer prices and discounts, purchase orders, sales orders and stock, and links them to the accounts. Check whether the package works with tiered prices, several warehouses and the data exchange your suppliers and customers use, such as EDI.

Stock and warehouse
Stock management shows what is in stock, what needs to be ordered and what has already been reserved. A warehouse management system (WMS) goes further: it directs order picking with a scanner, keeps track of locations in the warehouse and creates shipping labels. The packages below range from simple stock management to a full WMS.

B2B web shop
More and more business customers prefer to order online rather than by phone or email. A B2B web shop shows each customer their own prices and range, allows ordering on account and puts the order straight into your ERP. Check whether the web shop has that integration as standard.

Quotations
For larger orders or projects you make a quote. Quoting software pulls items and prices from your system, lets the customer approve digitally and turns the accepted quote into an order.

Product configuration
If you sell products in many variants or made to measure, a configurator (CPQ) calculates the right price and composition while the customer or salesperson makes choices. That prevents errors in quotes and orders.

Customer contact and sales
A CRM keeps track of which customers buy what, whom you need to call and which quotes are open. For a wholesaler with sales reps, a good app for on the road matters, with the customer's order history at hand.

Purchase invoices
A wholesaler receives a lot of purchase invoices. Invoice processing reads them in automatically, matches them to the purchase order and the goods receipt, and sends them for approval before they reach the accounts.

How the packages work together
At most wholesalers, items, prices and stock are kept in one place: the ERP. The web shop, the warehouse system and the quoting software read that data and send orders back. For each package, ask which integration exists with your ERP and how often stock is updated, so that a customer doesn't order something in the web shop that has already sold out.
What to look for
- Customer prices: can the package work with price agreements per customer, tiered prices and promotions?
- EDI: large customers and suppliers often exchange orders and invoices electronically. Ask which standards the package supports.
- Growth: can the package handle more items, orders and warehouses than you have now?
- E-invoices: business customers increasingly ask for invoices via Peppol. Ask whether the package can send and receive them.
Frequently asked questions about software for wholesale
What software does a wholesaler need?
Usually an ERP or trade package for items, prices, purchasing, sales and stock, with a B2B web shop and, with many orders, a warehouse system. Quotes, CRM and purchase invoices can sit in the ERP or in separate packages that connect to it.
What is the difference between stock management and a WMS?
Stock management shows how much you have of each item and when you need to reorder. A WMS also directs the work in the warehouse: where an item is, in which order you pick and which shipment is ready. With a small warehouse, stock management is often enough.
What does an ERP cost for a wholesaler?
That depends on the number of users, the modules and the setup. On top of the licence, expect one-off costs for implementation and transferring your items. Read what an ERP system costs.
How we choose the packages
For each area, this page shows the packages from our comparison whose supplier says they are suitable for this industry. In a category that is made for the industry itself, all packages are shown.
At the top are the packages made mainly for this industry: their supplier picks a few industries, not almost all of them. They are followed by the packages with the most reviews on SoftwareWatcher. Nobody pays for a place on this page.
