Software for healthcare

In healthcare, most of the time should go to clients and patients. Software has to keep the administration around it small: the record, the claims, the rotas and the obligations around quality and training. Here you can see, per area, which packages their suppliers say are suitable for healthcare.

The electronic record is the most important package in almost every healthcare organisation. Around it are staff scheduling and time tracking, quality management for a quality mark, and HR software for personnel files, absence and training. A small practice often gets by with an EHR with scheduling and claims; a larger organisation needs the rest too.

Electronic health record (EHR)

An EHR contains the record, treatment plans and reporting, and in many packages also the schedule and claims. There are EHRs for a single discipline, such as physiotherapy, and for broad healthcare organisations. Check whether the package supports the standards and integrations of your sector.

Rotas and planning

Care goes on day and night. Rota software takes shifts, qualifications, contract hours and the Working Hours Act into account, and lets staff swap shifts. In home care, planning routes and client visits comes on top.

Hours

Hours worked determine pay and, in parts of healthcare, also what you can claim. Time tracking records hours per shift or client and passes them on to payroll.

Quality and quality marks

For a quality mark such as HKZ or ISO, you show that you work to fixed agreements, report incidents and learn from them. A quality management system stores protocols and procedures, records reports and schedules audits, so you have everything to hand at an audit.

Personnel files and HR

A healthcare organisation has many employees, contracts and changes. HR software keeps personnel files, contracts and appraisals up to date and lets employees request leave and view their details themselves.

Absence

Absence costs a healthcare organisation a lot, because the shift still has to be covered. Absence software guides you through the steps of the Dutch Gatekeeper Improvement Act (Wet verbetering poortwachter), keeps track of contact with the occupational physician and shows where absence occurs.

Training and registrations

Healthcare professionals have to keep their knowledge up to date, for example to re-register in the BIG register or a quality register. Training software schedules courses and keeps track of who has completed which training, so you can see when someone needs to repeat a course.

How the packages work together

The EHR is usually the centre. Rotas and hours go to payroll, and in home care the planning of client visits often comes from the EHR itself. For each package, ask which integrations exist with your EHR and your payroll, so that you enter employees and clients in only one place.

What to look for

  • Privacy: health data are special category personal data under the GDPR. Ask where the data are stored, who can access them and whether the supplier signs a data processing agreement.
  • Information security: in Dutch healthcare, NEN 7510 is the usual standard. Ask whether the supplier is certified for it.
  • Your sector: an EHR for physiotherapy works differently from an EHR for elderly care or mental healthcare. Choose a package that is widely used in your sector.
  • Switching: you have to keep records for years. Ask how you take them with you if you switch later.

Frequently asked questions about software for healthcare

What software does a healthcare practice need?

At least an EHR, often with scheduling and claims built in. With staff come rotas, time tracking and payroll. Larger organisations also use software for quality, HR, absence and training.

What does an EHR cost?

That depends on your sector, the number of practitioners and the modules you need. For large organisations, the price is usually set by quotation. Read what an EHR costs.

Does healthcare software have to meet special requirements?

Yes. You work with health data, so the GDPR sets stricter requirements, and for information security NEN 7510 is the standard. Each sector has its own standards for claims and data exchange. Ask the supplier how the package meets them.

How we choose the packages

For each area, this page shows the packages from our comparison whose supplier says they are suitable for this industry. In a category that is made for the industry itself, all packages are shown.

At the top are the packages made mainly for this industry: their supplier picks a few industries, not almost all of them. They are followed by the packages with the most reviews on SoftwareWatcher. Nobody pays for a place on this page.
