Moneybird review 2026: what does it cost and who does it suit?
Moneybird review: what the four plans cost, the limits on transactions, users and bank connections, and who Moneybird suits.
Moneybird charges not per feature but by volume: bank transactions, users and bank connections. We list the four plans with their prices and limits, show what to watch out for and who a different package suits better.
Moneybird at a glance
Moneybird is online accounting software for freelancers, sole traders and small private limited companies. You use it to create invoices and quotes, process receipts and bank transactions and file your VAT return. You pay a fixed amount per month for a plan. The plans differ mainly in how many bank transactions you may process per month, how many users may log in and whether you can connect an external bank account.
On 7 November 2026 we read Moneybird's pricing page, help articles and terms again. Everything below comes from those pages and from the reviews users write on SoftwareWatcher. We did not test Moneybird ourselves with an administration of our own, and we do not give a score. Further down is a short test you can run yourself during the trial.
What does Moneybird cost? All plans and limits
Moneybird has four plans. The pricing page opens on annual billing; paying monthly costs more. Below are both amounts per month. The pricing page does not say whether the amounts include or exclude VAT.
| Package | Paying monthly | Paying annually (per month) | Bank transactions per month | Users | Connected bank accounts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compact | €4 | €3 | 5 | 1 | none |
| Start | €18 | €15 | 20 | 1 | none (import bank files yourself) |
| Groei | €35 | €29 | 50 | 5 | 5 |
| Compleet | €49 | €41 | unlimited | unlimited | unlimited |
What else differs per plan:
- Compact is meant for a small or dormant administration: 1 sales invoice per month, 3 documents with smart processing, 20 lines for hours, no recurring invoices and no electronic VAT return.
- Start, Groei and Compleet have unlimited sales invoices, recurring invoices and the electronic VAT return.
- Every plan includes scan and recognise, processing UBL invoices, sending and receiving via Peppol, the EC sales list, the API and free access for your bookkeeper.
There is no starter offer or first-year discount: the price in the table is what you pay from the first month. You can try Moneybird free for 60 days, on the Compleet plan.
Costs that may come on top:
- The Moneybird Betaalrekening, a business account built into the package, is an add-on: free for the first 12 months, then €7 per month for the first 5 accounts and €0.15 per transaction.
- If your customers pay online, an iDEAL payment costs €0.29 and a SEPA direct debit €0.25. Credit card and Bancontact cost 1% to 5%.
- You do not create payslips in Moneybird. Moneybird names connections with the payroll packages Nmbrs and Employes, which have their own prices; without a connection you post the payroll journal entry yourself (help article on payroll).
What Moneybird does well
- Everything in every plan. Even Start has unlimited invoices, Peppol, scan and recognise and the VAT return. So you mainly pay for volume, not for individual features.
- Flexible switching. A larger plan starts immediately, a smaller plan after the period you have already paid for.
- Your bookkeeper does not count. Bookkeepers fall outside the user limit, and the Moneybird Betaalrekening does not count towards the limit on bank connections (help article on limits).
- Long trial. 60 days with every feature of Compleet is ample time to work through a full VAT period.
What to watch out for
- Transactions count when you match them. Moneybird counts a bank transaction when you match it to an invoice, receipt or category, not on the date of the transaction. Unused transactions lapse at the end of the month. If you clear a three-month backlog in one go, you need a larger plan that month.
- Start has no bank connection. On Start you import bank files yourself. If you want transactions to come in automatically, you need Groei, or Moneybird's Betaalrekening.
- Too many users or connections blocks the account. If after a downgrade you have more users than your plan allows, the administration is blocked after 16 days; with too many bank connections after 24 hours. If you reach the transaction limit you can keep working; only processing transactions stops.
- No income tax return. Moneybird provides the profit and loss account and the balance sheet for your return, but you file the return itself elsewhere (help article on the income tax return).
- Cancelling means deleting. If you cancel your subscription, Moneybird deletes the administration 14 days after the end date. To keep your data in Moneybird for the 7-year retention obligation, keep at least Compact (help article on cancelling).
Who does Moneybird suit, and who should look elsewhere?
Moneybird suits a freelancer or small private limited company that does its own bookkeeping, sends invoices from the package and knows in advance how many bank transactions there are each month. With fewer than 20 transactions per month and a manual bank import, Start is enough. A business with a colleague or a second account ends up on Groei, and a web shop with many small payments soon on Compleet.
Look elsewhere if:
- you want a fixed low amount with many transactions: at e-Boekhouden.nl and DigiBoox you do not pay per transaction. Read our review of e-Boekhouden.nl and the one of DigiBoox;
- you want to create payslips in the same package: that is possible with Jortt (see our review of Jortt);
- you are mainly torn between two packages: read Moneybird vs e-Boekhouden.nl or see all alternatives to Moneybird.
What packages on the market cost is in what does accounting software cost. If you are looking for something that costs nothing at all, first read what free accounting software does and does not do.
Switching to or from Moneybird
To Moneybird. You cannot import your old bookkeeping in one go. You start with an opening balance: one journal entry with your balance sheet position on the day before you start. If you want to file the VAT return for an earlier period from Moneybird, you enter the old invoices and bank transactions retroactively. Contacts can be imported from Excel, CSV or vCard (help article on switching). Switching is easiest at the start of a financial year.
Leaving Moneybird. You export your bookkeeping as an audit file via Instellingen, Boekhouding, Boekhouding exporteren. Moneybird works with categories instead of ledger accounts; for an audit file every category needs a ledger code. Download the audit file before you close the year, otherwise it lacks the profit and loss account (help article on the audit file). Also keep your invoices as PDFs.
How to test Moneybird yourself during the trial
We did not test Moneybird ourselves. With these five steps you will see within an hour whether it fits your administration:
- Count in your banking app how many transactions you had over the last three months. Divide by three: that decides whether Start, Groei or Compleet suits you.
- Import a bank file for one month and match ten transactions to invoices and receipts. See how often Moneybird suggests the right category itself.
- Photograph three receipts with the app and check whether amount, date and VAT are recognised correctly.
- Create an invoice with your own logo, send it to yourself and pay it with the iDEAL link.
- Prepare a draft VAT return and export an audit file, so you know you can take your data with you again.
User experiences
What business owners themselves think of Moneybird is in the reviews on the Moneybird profile. There you also see where users came from and where they went. Those reviews are written by users, not by us; this article gives no score of its own.
Frequently asked questions about Moneybird
What does Moneybird cost per month?
Moneybird costs €4 to €49 per month when paying monthly, or €3 to €41 per month when paying annually. Start costs €18 (€15 paid annually) and Groei, which Moneybird calls its most chosen plan, €35 (€29). The pricing page does not say whether the amounts include or exclude VAT.
Is Moneybird free?
No. You can try Moneybird free for 60 days with every feature of Compleet. After that you choose a paid plan; the cheapest is Compact at €3 per month paid annually, with 1 sales invoice per month and no VAT return.
What happens if I have more bank transactions than my plan allows?
You can keep working, but you cannot process any more transactions that month until the new subscription month starts or you choose a larger plan. A larger plan starts immediately.
Can I take my administration with me when I stop?
Yes. You download an audit file, an Excel export of the ledger cards and your invoices. Do so before the end date of your subscription: 14 days later Moneybird deletes the administration.
